I came across Tom's blog 'Sand and Water Tables' a while ago when I was researching my '50 Fantastics' book about sand and water.
Reading it made me want to get out my card board tubes, drill and tape and knock up something spectacular.

The following apparatus takes advantage of the axiom : Children are compelled by nature to put things in holes. This apparatus is basically a piece of plywood with holes that creates a cover over the sensory table with space underneath.
